HIROSHI FUJIMOTO AWARD

This award is presented each year at the Men’s Region 1 Championships. The recipient is an individual within the Region who has gone above and beyond in their service to Region 1.

The award recognizes selflessness, whether demonstrated in the prior year or through a cumulative contribution over many years.

It is the most prestigious honor given within the Region 1 Men’s Gymnastics community and reflects the recipient’s dedication to the development, administration, vision, and overall quality of men’s gymnastics in Region 1, in the spirit of Hiroshi Fujimoto’s contributions to our Region.

Rob Survick

Rob’s lifelong commitment to men’s gymnastics reflects the very spirit of the Hiroshi Fujimoto Award. A member of the Arizona State University men’s gymnastics team beginning in 1998, Rob not only competed with passion but also became an advocate for the survival and growth of the program during a challenging time for collegiate men’s gymnastics. His experience as an athlete shaped a deep, lasting dedication to the sport and its future.

Following his collegiate career, Rob became a respected and influential coach within the Region 1 community. From his early work at Sunday’s Gymnastics and Desert Devils under Chris Sommer, to joining the Aspire and Junior Sun Devils staff in 2005 under Dan Hayden, he consistently demonstrated leadership, humility, and a commitment to athlete development. That same year, he helped launch Arizona’s TNT program and served as the state’s first TNT State Director, building a strong foundation that expanded opportunities across the region.

As Head Coach of the Junior Sun Devils beginning in 2011, Rob made a lasting impact on countless athletes. Known for recognizing potential and bringing out the best in others, he used gymnastics to build confidence, character, and resilience. Many of his athletes advanced to top NCAA programs, including Brandon Briones, whom Rob coached to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. His influence extended beyond the gym, leaving a lasting mark on athletes, families, and the entire Region 1 community.

Adam Lomax

Adam’s journey in gymnastics began at the age of three and quickly grew into a lifelong passion. He spent his formative years training under Steve Butcher, where he developed the work ethic, determination, and mindset that would shape his future in the sport. After a nearly 15-year competitive career, Adam transitioned directly into coaching, where he has spent more than two decades developing athletes at the highest levels. During his time at SCEGA Gymnastics, he coached athletes to over 100 state, regional, and national titles, as well as guiding more than a dozen athletes to the U.S. Future Stars and Junior National Teams.

In 2019, Adam achieved a lifelong goal by founding Agility Kids in Temecula, California. His impact as a coach has continued at the national and international level, with athletes earning U.S. National titles and representing Team USA in international competition, bringing home multiple medals. Adam has also been a dedicated leader within Region 1, serving on the SCMGA and Region 1 Boards for over 15 years, including six years as Region 1 Chairman and continuing service as Vice Chairman. His contributions extend to international training opportunities, national staff appointments, judging, and education, where he remains an active and respected presence in the gymnastics community.

Matt Lowry

Matt’s lifelong connection to gymnastics began at a young age, inspired by the 1992 Olympics. He went on to compete collegiately at Temple University before continuing at Cal Poly Pomona, where he transitioned into full-time coaching. Over the next decade at Payke Gymnastics, Matt developed into a highly respected coach, eventually leading the program as Head Coach and helping it earn SoCal Optional Club of the Year honors. Throughout his career, he has coached hundreds of athletes, guiding many to collegiate gymnastics and helping produce national champions. He is known for his attention to detail, strong leadership, and the positive culture he builds for both athletes and families.

Beyond coaching, Matt has made a significant impact through his leadership and service within the gymnastics community. He has held multiple roles within the SoCal Men’s Gymnastics Association, including Treasurer, President/Director, and webmaster, while also leading key initiatives such as state clinics and regional programs like Future Stars and Compulsory Camps. His ability to combine coaching expertise with organizational and technical skills has supported gyms, competitions, and regional systems at every level. Through his work, Matt continues to contribute to the growth, structure, and long-term success of men’s gymnastics in Region 1.

Scott Barclay

Scott Barclay has dedicated decades to the sport of gymnastics as both an athlete and coach, beginning his coaching career in 1979. As head coach of the Arizona State University men’s gymnastics club team, he has built one of the most successful collegiate club programs in the country, leading the team to numerous national titles while developing All-Americans and individual national champions. His leadership is especially notable given the program’s self-funded structure, demonstrating his commitment, resourcefulness, and passion for providing opportunities for athletes.

As a competitor, Scott was an accomplished All-American at Arizona State University and a member of the USA National Team, representing the United States in international competitions. Following his competitive career, he continued to serve the sport in multiple roles, including coaching at the collegiate level, judging as an FIG Brevet official, and contributing to national and international events. His long-standing dedication to athlete development and the growth of men’s gymnastics continues through his support of collegiate opportunities and programs that expand the future of the sport.

Tim Klempnauer.png

Tim Klempnauer

Tim has dedicated more than three decades to men’s gymnastics, with a primary passion for coaching. Over the course of his career, he has developed numerous high-level athletes, including JO National Team members, Future Stars, national champions, and USA Championship qualifiers, while also serving as a presenter and clinician at the national, regional, and state levels.

He has made a significant impact as an event director, serving as Meet Director for multiple JO National Championships and Region 1 Championships, and contributing to major events such as the Olympic Trials, World Championships, and Pacific Alliance Championships.

Tim has been a longtime leader in Region 1, serving on the board for many years, including roles as Region 1 Chairman and multiple state chairman positions. His contributions also extend to the national level through service with the USA Men’s Gymnastics Coaches Association, the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors, and various committees, along with experience as an FIG judge.

A highly decorated contributor to the sport, Tim is a Frank Cumiskey Award recipient, a multi-time Coach of the Year and Iron Man Award winner, and a former competitive gymnast.

Roger Baldwin

Roger is best known for his leadership as Chairman of Region 1. As one of the most successful Regional Chairmen, Region 1 won more Regional Team Championships under his leadership than any other region, including a sweep of all three teams in 2009. Prior to his 12 years as Region 1 Chairman, Roger served as the Nevada State Chairman for 13 years. Together with his wife Debbie, they founded and directed the Select Team Camp and, in the summer of 2007, traveled with over 20 Region 1 gymnasts to Japan.

Roger Baldwin has served as Co-Meet Director for numerous major events, including the 2011 and 2014 JO Nationals in Long Beach, as well as the 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017 Regional Championships. He has also contributed as a volunteer at the 1995, 1999, 2002, and 2005 Regionals, the 2002, 2004, and 2007 JO Nationals, and the 2003 World Championships.

Roger and Debbie owned High Sierra Gymnastics for 10 years. Roger also served the sport in multiple roles beyond administration, including coaching and judging.

Most notably, in 2009 Roger received the Frank Cumiskey Award, the highest honor in Men’s Gymnastics.

2017

Paul Tickenoff

Paul Tickenoff is probably most known as a Judge (starting at 18 yrs old).  Since 1974, Paul has consistently judged 15-30 Age group, Special Olympic or NCAA meets per year.  Internationally, Paul has judged the Chunichi Cup; Tokyo World Sports Fair; Jr and Sr Pacific Alliance meets; and a China/Russia/USA meet.  Paul was an official for the 2008 Pacific Rim Championship, the 2009 African Championships & 2011 Tokyo World Cup.

 

Paul was also a high level gymnast, coach, and gym owner.  As a gymnast he was a US National team member for 4 years.  He was on the gold medal USA team at the 1969 Cup of the Americas in Mexico City (3rd in AA).  In 1970, he was a on the USA bronze medal team at the World University Games in Turin, Italy. 

 

As a coach he trained several gymnasts to National Championship Titles, 2 top-two team finishes, and 1 gold medal team title at the Senior AAU National Championships.  Paul has acted as owner/director and/or coach for gymnastics clubs, camp programs and his mobile gymnastics program (The Gym Mobile) that provided gymnastics instruction weekly to as many as105 schools from 1982-2000.  Over the years, Paul has participated and volunteered in numerous gymnastics workshops, clinics, and conferences as a technician, instructor and organizer for the continuing education of other gymnastics professionals.

 

Paul has served as the Meet Referee of our Region 1 Championships for over 15 years. He also served as our Region 1 Chairman (2011-2013)!

Lynn Boman has been involved with Men’s Gymnastics since 1999 as a coach, team coordinator and as a judge. Lynn was voted onto the SCMGA board as the Member at Large in 2002 and then was appointed as Secretary in 2003, a position that she held for 6 years.

 

In 2009 she moved into the SCMGA State Chairman position and has been there ever since. Lynn has worked at 3 National Championship meets and countless numbers of State and Regional Championships in various capacities.

 

In addition to gymnastics she stays busy as a wife of 29 years and the mother of two sons, Daniel and Joseph. Her hobbies include camping, hiking, rock climbing, cycling, reading and playing games.

Debbie Baldwin

Debbie Baldwin began her gymnastics career in 1981 when she enrolled her 5 year old son into a gymnastics class for beginning boys.  Along the way, she found herself as a member of the Booster Club:  President, Secretary and Treasurer.  She was the proud mom of a college athlete when her son competed for Berkeley and is now is a coach at Stanford!

She married Roger Baldwin and they bought High Sierra Gymnastics and ran it for 10 years.  She assisted Roger when he was the Nevada State Chairman and now as the Region 1 Chairman.  She is the Region 1 Treasurer and Select Team Camp Coordinator.

Debbie has been involved in the hosting of many meets including the role of Co-Meet director for the Regionals in 2002, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015.  She was also the Co-Meet director for the JO Nationals in 2011 and 2014.  Debbie considers herself the “grandma” of the Region 1 athletes.

She has watched so many of them grow from young boys into amazing men.  Nothing makes her happier than running into her ex-Region 1 boys and hearing about their lives as adults.

 

She is passionate about the role that gymnastics can play in the lives of young children and their development as they grow.  She loves being involved with the kids, parents and coaches of this great Region!
